Input: signature.jpg, 1.2 MB phone photo

    Result: signature-compressed.jpg, about 18 KB

Crop to the signature first for the sharpest result.

    Passport-size photo

    Input: photo.jpg, 3 MB

Result: photo-compressed.jpg under 20 KB, scaled to about 400 px

How to compress an image to 20KB

The tool searches for the highest quality that still fits under 20 KB. It first lowers the JPG quality step by step; only if the image is still too large at a low quality does it reduce the pixel dimensions, just enough to fit. So you get the sharpest image the limit allows, without trial and error.

Where a 20KB limit is common

Online application forms for exams, jobs, scholarships and government services often set strict limits: a signature under 10 to 20 KB and a photo under 20 to 50 KB. A phone photo is usually 2 to 5 MB, a hundred times too big, so it has to be compressed hard.

At 20 KB, the tool keeps the full picture but reduces its pixel size, typically to 300 to 500 pixels wide, which is exactly what these forms display. For a signature, photograph it on plain white paper in good light and crop tightly around it: a clean, high-contrast signature stays crisp even at 10 KB.

    Tips for the best result

    • Crop first. Cutting away empty background leaves more of the 20 KB for what matters. Use the image resizer & cropper, then compress here.
    • Choose JPG for photos. It is accepted by every upload form and gives the smallest files for photos. PNG keeps transparency but needs more space.
    • Check the exact limit. We count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes and stay under it, so the result is accepted whether a website counts 1,000 or 1,024 bytes per KB.
    • Different limit? Type any size in the KB box; the image is recompressed instantly.

    Private by design

Your images are processed by your own browser and never uploaded to a server, so they stay on your device. There is no watermark, no sign-up and no limit on how many images you convert.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I compress an image to 20KB?

Drop the image on this page. The size is preset to 20 KB, so the compressed image is ready to download straight away.

Will the image look worse at 20KB?

Small details soften a little, but for signatures and passport-size photos 20 KB is plenty: forms show them at a small size. Cropping away the background first keeps the most detail.

Can I compress several images at once?

Yes. Drop several images; each is compressed to the limit and you can download them one by one or all together.

    Are my photos uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser, which matters for ID photos, signatures and documents.
