A Unix timestamp counts the seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970. Paste one to see the exact date and time it represents.

How to use the Unix Timestamp to Date Converter

  1. 1 Paste a timestamp — the unit is detected automatically from its length.
  2. 2 Override the unit if needed.
  3. 3 Copy the UTC, local or ISO 8601 representation.

Formula

Date = 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z + timestamp seconds
(10 digits ≈ seconds, 13 ≈ milliseconds, 16 ≈ microseconds)

Worked examples

Seconds

Input: 1700000000

Result: 14 Nov 2023 22:13:20 UTC

10-digit timestamp

Milliseconds

Input: 1700000000000

Result: Same moment

Why Unix time?

Unix time is a single number that is independent of time zones and daylight saving, which makes it ideal for storing and comparing moments in databases, logs and APIs.

The year 2038 problem

Systems that store Unix time as a signed 32-bit integer overflow on 19 January 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC. Modern systems use 64-bit integers, which push the limit billions of years into the future.

Leap seconds

Unix time ignores leap seconds — every day is exactly 86,400 seconds — so it can differ from atomic time (TAI) by a few seconds.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Unix epoch?

Midnight UTC on 1 January 1970, the zero point of Unix time.

How do I know if a timestamp is in seconds or milliseconds?

Current timestamps have 10 digits in seconds and 13 in milliseconds. Auto-detect uses this rule.

Can timestamps be negative?

Yes — negative values represent dates before 1970.
