HTML to paste inside <head>

Use this meta tag generator to write the HTML tags that search engines and social networks read: the title, meta description, canonical link, robots directive, Open Graph and Twitter Card tags. Fill in the form, check the live preview, and paste the result inside the head of your page.

How to use the Meta Tag Generator

  1. 1 Type your page title and meta description. The meters show whether they are likely to fit in Google results.
  2. 2 Add the canonical URL, your site name and a share image (1200 × 630 pixels works well for social previews).
  3. 3 Open "More options" for robots, Open Graph type and Twitter settings, then copy the generated tags into your page head.

What meta tags do

Meta tags are small pieces of HTML in the <head> of a page. Visitors never see them, but search engines and social networks read them to decide how to describe your page.

  • Title tag: the clickable headline in search results and the browser tab. It is one of the strongest on-page signals for what a page is about.
  • Meta description: the summary under the title. It is not a direct ranking factor, but a clear one can earn more clicks. Google often rewrites it to match the search.
  • Canonical link: tells search engines which URL is the main version when the same content is reachable at several addresses.
  • Robots tag: noindex keeps a page out of results and nofollow asks crawlers not to follow its links. With no robots tag a page is treated as index, follow.
  • Open Graph and Twitter Card tags: control the title, description and image shown when a link is shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Slack and messaging apps.

How long should a title and description be?

Google cuts text by pixel width, not by character count. As a guide, keep titles to about 50 to 60 characters (roughly 580 pixels) and descriptions to about 120 to 155 characters. Put the important words first, so a cut at the end loses little.

What you do not need

The old meta keywords tag is ignored by Google and Bing, so this generator does not write one. The robots tag is only written when it differs from the default, because writing index, follow changes nothing.

Where the tags go

Paste the generated block inside the <head> of every page, with the title and description written for that page. In WordPress, Shopify and most CMS themes you set these in the SEO settings instead of editing HTML. Use the preview here to draft the text first.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a meta description be?

About 120 to 155 characters is a safe range. Google truncates by pixel width, so a few characters either way can matter. If your description is much shorter, Google may write its own.

Do meta tags affect rankings?

The title tag does. The meta description does not directly, but a good one raises the chance someone clicks your result. Open Graph and Twitter tags do not affect rankings; they control how shared links look.

What is the difference between canonical and noindex?

A canonical link says "this other URL is the main version", so duplicates are grouped. A noindex tag says "do not show this page at all". Use canonical for duplicates and noindex for pages that should not appear in search.

What size should the Open Graph image be?

Use 1200 × 630 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio) as a JPG or PNG under 5 MB. Keep important content away from the edges because some platforms crop.

Is anything uploaded when I use this tool?

No. The tags are generated in your browser and nothing you type leaves it.
