Formula
New value = Original × (1 + Percent ÷ 100) % increase = (New − Original) ÷ Original × 100
Worked examples
Input: $52,000 increased by 4%
Result: $54,080
52,000 × 1.04 = 54,080 (an increase of 2,080)
Input: From 80 to 92
Result: 15%
(92 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 15%
Why multiply by (1 + rate)?
Increasing a value by 20% means keeping 100% of it and adding another 20%, so you multiply by 1.20. This single multiplier is handy for chaining increases: two consecutive 10% rises equal × 1.1 × 1.1 = × 1.21, a 21% total increase — not 20%.
Common uses
- Salary rises and inflation adjustments
- Price increases and supplier surcharges
- Growth in website traffic, users or revenue
Frequently asked questions
How do I add 15% to a number?

How do I find the percentage increase between two numbers?
