JSON to Excel Converter

Convert JSON to Excel or CSV: arrays of objects become rows and columns, nested fields are flattened into dot-named columns.

Updated

You can also drop a file onto the box. Everything is converted in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

This JSON to Excel converter turns API responses and data exports into a spreadsheet. Paste the JSON or open a file, check the table preview and download it as an Excel XLSX file or as CSV.

How to use the JSON to Excel Converter

  1. 1 Paste your JSON into the box, or click Open file to load a .json file.
  2. 2 Check the table preview: one row per item, one column per field.
  3. 3 Click Download Excel (.xlsx) or Download CSV.

Worked examples

API response

Input: [{"id": 1, "name": "Ada"}, {"id": 2, "name": "Alan"}]

Result: Columns id and name, two rows

Nested data

Input: {"address": {"city": "London"}}

Result: A column named address.city

Lists are kept as JSON text in one cell.

How to convert JSON to Excel

Data from APIs, logs and exports usually arrives as JSON: easy for programs, hard to read for people. A spreadsheet makes it easy to scan, filter, sort and share.

The converter accepts the common shapes of tabular JSON:

  • an array of objects, such as [{"name": "Ada"}, {"name": "Alan"}]: each object becomes a row and each key a column;
  • an array of arrays: each inner array becomes a row;
  • an object that contains such an array, for example {"data": [ … ]} from an API: the first array found is used;
  • a single object, which becomes one row.

Nested objects and lists

Objects inside objects are flattened into columns with dotted names, so {"address": {"city": "London"}} gives a column address.city. Lists are written as JSON text in a single cell, so nothing is lost and you can still see their contents. When objects have different keys, every key gets a column and missing values are left empty.

Excel or CSV?

Download XLSX for a spreadsheet with sized columns that opens directly in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers. Download CSV for a plain text file to import into another system; it includes a UTF-8 marker so Excel shows accents correctly.

Private by design

The file is read and converted by your own browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so it is safe to use with customer lists, finance exports and other internal data. Large files simply take a moment longer on a slower computer.

Frequently asked questions

What JSON can be converted?

An array of objects, an array of arrays, a single object, or an object holding one of those arrays (such as {"data": [ … ]}).

What happens to nested objects?

They are flattened into columns with dotted names, for example address.city. Lists are kept as JSON text in one cell.

Why does it say my JSON is invalid?

JSON needs double quotes around keys and text, and no trailing commas. Check the error message for the position of the problem.

Is my data uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.
