JSON-LD to paste into your page
Only mark up questions and answers that are visible on the page. After adding it, test the page with Google's Rich Results Test.
This FAQ schema generator turns your questions and answers into FAQPage structured data in JSON-LD, the format Google recommends. Add as many pairs as you need, copy the script tag, and paste it into the page where the same questions are visible.
How to use the FAQ Schema Generator
- 1 Type each question and its answer. Use "Add a question" for more rows.
- 2 Check the JSON-LD that appears underneath. Incomplete pairs are left out automatically.
- 3 Copy it into the page that shows the same questions, then test the page with Google's Rich Results Test.
Worked examples
Input: Q: Is shipping free? A: Yes, on orders over $50.
Result: A FAQPage with one Question and one acceptedAnswer
The answer text can include simple HTML such as links and lists.
What FAQ schema is
FAQ schema is structured data that labels the questions and answers on a page so that search engines understand them. It is written as a small block of JSON-LD inside a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag, using the FAQPage, Question and Answer types from schema.org.
What Google shows today
Since August 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results (the expandable questions under a listing) only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. For most sites the markup will not produce that rich result any more. It is still valid structured data, it helps search engines and other tools understand the page, and it does no harm when used correctly, but do not expect it to change how your listing looks.
Rules that keep the markup valid
- Mark up only what visitors can see. Every question and answer in the JSON-LD must also appear in the page content.
- Use it for real FAQs, where each question has one answer written by you. It is not meant for forums or pages where visitors submit several answers, and not for advertising.
- One FAQ block per page is enough. Do not repeat the same markup across many pages.
- Answers may contain basic HTML (
<a>,<b>,<ul>,<ol>,<p>,<br>), but plain text is safest.
Test it
After you add the script to your page, run the page through Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator to catch syntax errors. This generator escapes the text for you, so an answer containing </script> cannot break the page.
Frequently asked questions
Does FAQ schema still give rich results?
Only for a small set of authoritative government and health sites since August 2023. Other sites can still use the markup, but should not expect the expandable FAQ display.
Where do I paste the JSON-LD?
Anywhere in the HTML of the page, in the head or the body. Most sites put it in the head. Only add it to a page that shows the same questions and answers.
Can the answers contain HTML?
Yes, a limited set of tags such as links, lists and bold text. Plain text is the most reliable option.
What is the difference between JSON-LD and microdata?
JSON-LD keeps the structured data in one separate script block, while microdata mixes attributes into your visible HTML. Google recommends JSON-LD because it is easier to add and maintain.
Is anything I type uploaded?
No. The JSON-LD is built in your browser.
