If the end time is earlier than the start time, it is treated as the next day (overnight shift).
Enter durations as HH:MM, HH:MM:SS or plain minutes.
Work out shift lengths, billable hours or total time spent. Results are shown as HH:MM, decimal hours and total minutes.
How to use the Time Duration Calculator
- 1 Use "Time between two times" for a start and end time, with an optional unpaid break.
- 2 Use "Add & subtract durations" to total a list of HH:MM values.
- 3 Copy the result in the format your timesheet needs.
Formula
Duration = end − start (+ 24 h if end < start) − break Decimal hours = total minutes ÷ 60
Worked examples
Input: 09:00 to 17:30, 30-min break
Result: 8:00 (8.00 h)
Decimal hours for payroll
Input: 22:00 to 06:15
Result: 8:15 (8.25 h)
Crosses midnight
Converting minutes to decimal hours
Payroll systems often need decimal hours. Divide minutes by 60: 15 min = 0.25 h, 30 min = 0.5 h, 45 min = 0.75 h. So 7 h 45 min is 7.75 hours — not 7.45.
Accepted formats
In the totals list you can type 1:30, 1:30:15 or a plain number of minutes such as 90.
