How to get faster
This typing speed test measures how fast and how accurately you type. Choose a length, start typing the words shown and get your words per minute (WPM), accuracy and a rating, with tips on what to practise next.
How to use the Typing Speed Test
- 1 Choose the test length: 30 seconds, 1, 2 or 5 minutes.
- 2 Click the box and type the words shown, pressing space after each word. The timer starts with your first letter.
- 3 When the time is up, see your speed, accuracy, rating and tips. Press Esc or Try again to start a new test.
Worked examples
Input: 45 correct words of average length
Result: about 45 WPM, rated Average
Close to the typical adult speed of around 40 WPM.
Input: 70 WPM raw speed at 88% accuracy
Result: about 60 WPM net
Wrong words do not count, so accuracy matters as much as speed.
How the typing speed test works
The test shows a stream of common English words. Type each word and press space to move to the next one. The current word is highlighted, letters turn dark as you type them correctly and red when they are wrong, and finished words turn green or red. Common words are used on purpose: the test measures your typing, not your spelling.
The timer only starts with your first letter, so you can take your time to get ready. When the time runs out, your result appears straight away. Press Esc at any moment to restart with new words.
How WPM and accuracy are calculated
Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM), where one "word" is 5 characters, including the space after it. This standard makes results comparable, whether the text has short or long words.
- Speed (net WPM) counts only the words you typed correctly. A word with a typo does not count at all, just as a typo has to be fixed in real writing.
- Raw speed counts everything you typed, mistakes included. A big gap between raw and net speed means accuracy is holding you back.
- Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that were correct.
What is a good typing speed?
| WPM | Rating | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Under 20 | Beginner | Still looking for the keys |
| 20–34 | Learner | Getting the hang of it |
| 35–49 | Average | The speed of most adults (around 40 WPM) |
| 50–69 | Fast | Comfortable for office work and study |
| 70–89 | Very fast | Professional typists and experienced programmers |
| 90+ | Expert | Very few people type this fast |
For most jobs 40 WPM is enough; data entry and transcription roles often ask for 60 WPM or more, with high accuracy.
How to type faster
- Learn touch typing. Rest your fingers on the home row (A S D F and J K L ;) and find it by feel with the bumps on F and J.
- Do not look at the keyboard. It slows you down for a few days, then your speed rises quickly.
- Accuracy first. Fixing mistakes takes longer than typing carefully; aim for 95% or more before pushing for speed.
- Practise a little every day. Ten minutes a day builds muscle memory faster than an hour once a week.
- Read ahead. Look at the next word while typing the current one, so your fingers never wait.
Your results stay private
The test runs entirely in your browser. Your personal best is kept only on your own device, so nothing is uploaded and there is no account to create.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 WPM is average for adults. 50 to 70 WPM is fast, and above 70 WPM is the level of professional typists.
Why is my speed lower than my raw speed?
Your speed only counts correctly typed words; raw speed counts everything. Improving accuracy closes the gap.
Which test length should I choose?
One minute is the standard typing test. 30 seconds is a quick check, while the 2 and 5 minute typing tests give a steadier result and test your stamina, as many job typing tests do.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The test works with on-screen keyboards too, although most people type faster on a physical keyboard.
Is my personal best saved?
Yes, for each test length, but only in your own browser. Clearing your browser data resets it.
