Storage manufacturers count in powers of 1,000 while operating systems often count in powers of 1,024. Convert between both systems and bits without confusion.

How to use the Data Storage Converter

  1. 1 Type a value in either box — the conversion works in both directions.
  2. 2 Choose the units to convert storage from and to, or click any row in the table.
  3. 3 Use the swap button to reverse the conversion, then copy the result.

Formula

Decimal (SI): 1 KB = 1,000 B, 1 MB = 1,000 KB …
Binary (IEC): 1 KiB = 1,024 B, 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB …
1 byte = 8 bits

Worked examples

New hard drive

Input: 1 TB

Result: 931.32 GiB

Why Windows shows "931 GB"

Download size

Input: 4.7 GB

Result: 37.6 gigabits

Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?

The drive maker uses decimal units: 1 TB = 10¹² bytes. Windows divides by 1,024³ but labels the result "GB" — it is really GiB. 10¹² ÷ 1,073,741,824 ≈ 931.3 GiB. No space is missing.

Bits vs. bytes

Internet speeds are measured in bits per second (Mbps), file sizes in bytes. Divide megabits by 8 to get megabytes: a 100 Mbps connection downloads at most about 12.5 MB per second.

Frequently asked questions

How many MB are in a GB?

1,000 MB in decimal units, or 1,024 MiB in a GiB.

What is the difference between GB and GiB?

A GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes; a GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes (2³⁰).

How many bits are in a byte?

8 bits.
