Step by step
Enter two fractions or mixed numbers and an operation. You get the answer in lowest terms, as a mixed number and as a decimal — with each step explained.
How to use the Fraction Calculator
- 1 Enter each fraction; use the small whole-number box for mixed numbers.
- 2 Choose +, −, × or ÷.
- 3 Read the simplified result and follow the working below it.
Formula
a/b + c/d = (ad + bc) / bd a/b − c/d = (ad − bc) / bd a/b × c/d = ac / bd a/b ÷ c/d = ad / bc
Worked examples
Input: 1/2 + 1/3
Result: 5/6
Common denominator 6: 3/6 + 2/6
Input: 2 1/4 ÷ 1/2
Result: 4 1/2
9/4 × 2/1 = 18/4 = 9/2
Simplifying fractions
A fraction is in lowest terms when the numerator and denominator share no common factor other than 1. Divide both by their greatest common divisor (GCD): 18/24 → GCD 6 → 3/4.
Mixed numbers and improper fractions
A mixed number such as 2 ¾ equals the improper fraction (2 × 4 + 3)/4 = 11/4. Convert to improper fractions before multiplying or dividing, then convert back at the end.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add fractions with different denominators?
Rewrite both over a common denominator (the product of the denominators always works), add the numerators, then simplify.
How do I divide fractions?
Multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction: a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c.
Can I enter negative fractions?
Yes — put a minus sign on the whole number or the numerator.
